KCA ANNUAL AWARD DESCRIPTIONS
INSTITUTIONAL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
The Employee of the Year Award may be presented to an employee of the state or county adult or juvenile correctional facility whose contribution has enhanced the rehabilitation process for the inmates or residents, or whose performance has enhanced security, or who has performed a valued service to fellow employees or the facility or institution. The award may be given to an employee who, in addition to a good performance to the facility or institution, performed an outstanding service to the public or community, or whose action enhanced public relations between the department or agencies and the public.
PAUL J. WEBER AWARD
The Paul J. Weber Award may be given to a field service or aftercare officer who has distinguished himself/herself by making major contributions to the agency by enhancing the probability for successful completion of supervision by the clients; or for protection of the community through enhanced supervision and guidance of clients; or for enhancement of public service in conjunction with official job capacity which reflected favorably upon their field.
KCA MEDIA AWARD
The KCA Media Award may be presented to a journalist, news reporter or media person for their objective, honest and complete coverage of corrections issues. The criteria would include the following:

The story or series should be required to have an overall positive impact on corrections, the KCA or its members.

If the award is for a single issue, the nominee should have demonstrated history of supportive or objective presentation. depiction, etc. of corrections, the KCA or its members.

The story or series gained popular recognition. comprehensive coverage and the KCA was utilized as a resource to get the facts.
-
Topics could include individual adult or juvenile institutions, victim's programs or concerns, community supervision programs or other related stories.
KCA CITIZEN RECOGNITION AWARD
The KCA Citizen Recognition Award may be awarded to any person who is not a paid employee of the criminal justice system, whose support of the criminal justice system has been an enhancement of the criminal justice system, or who has provided a valued volunteer service to the criminal justice system.
KCA AWARD FOR VALOR
The KCA Award for Valor may be awarded to any person employed in an adult or juvenile facility in the criminal justice system or any member of a professional organization or private industry who, displaying courage:
-
saves or attempts to save the life of an employee who is acting in an official capacity in the criminal justice system;

prevents a situation from escalating into an emergency;
-
prevents major destruction of government property; or
-
any other action taken on the part of such a person that would display courage or bravery in order to assist others.
KCA WOMAN OF DISTINCTION IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AWARD
The KCA Woman of Distinction in Criminal Justice Award may be awarded to a woman in the criminal justice system who:
-
Has worked as a criminal justice professional for at least 10 years;
-
Uses her skills and talents to encourage the upward professional mobility of women who serve in the field;
-
Serves as a mentor for women in criminal justice, and as an advocate who supports the professional rights of women;
-
Serves her community as a voice for women, children, and families;
-
Has the respect of other criminal justice professionals.
Nominations on the above awards will be voted upon by the KCA Executive Board.
(The Kansas Department of Corrections Karl Menninger Award recipient is selected by the KDOC; the Kansas Parole Board recipient is selected by the Parole Board; The KCA Presidential Award is selected by the KCA President.)
